Keane is an artist, architect, and academic whose teaching, practice, and non- profit entrepreneurial work to green public imagination. She combines an ecological urbanism practice (STUDIO 1032) with writing, public speaking and community workshops on environmental initiatives along the Milwaukee-Chicago corridor. Projects include Eco Cruises on the Chicago River, the City of Chicago Green Roof Website, Milwaukee’s North East Side Plan (w/ SCB and Terry Guen, Ltd.), Milwaukee River Greenway Overlay District and Great Lakes Gateway focusing on education, conservation, smart growth guidelines and remediation of urban areas with integrated ecosystems. Select publications include ARCHITECTURE an INTERACTIVE INTRODUCTION, McGraw Hill (1996); The Culture of Design Education (2001); Eco literacy: Greening Public Imagination (2010); The Aesthetics of Sustainability (2008); Design Is Our Nature: Designing K12 Design Education (2013); Design THIS Place: Built Environment Education(2015); and STEAM by Design: Balancing Ecologies (2016).
Co-creator and Director of the award-winning informal eLearning DESIGNOPEDIA, NEXT.cc, she advocates for design thinking as necessary for engaged citizenry and community stewardship. NEXT.cc introduces what design is, what design does and why it is important in 50 states and over 200 countries encouraging project-based learning in K-12 schools. The APA American Association WI Chapter, Art Institute of Chicago, American Institute of Architects, American Architectural Foundation, Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, Graham Foundation, National Endowment of the Arts, PBS Chicago, United States Green Building Council and Union of International Architects recognize Keane’s innovative creation of socially connected landscapes.
