Reward systems send the message to kids that they should adhere to market norms, not social norms. When educators ask students to act for reasons other than social norms, they commodify their relationship with them and damage the ability to build a cooperative community. We will present a therapeutic approach to building a cooperative school culture where students learn how to act by taking full responsibility for each other's behaviors, learning, attendance, and cooperation. Participants will learn to establish agreed upon universal social norms with sustainable in-classroom structures for students and staff to consistently respond when norms are broken.
