Writing is often seen by colleges as the number one skill lacking in students. Black and Brown students have disproportionately high drop-out and college persistence rates. Education should support students in how to practice freedom so that they can be active agents in the formation and transformation of their own identity and society. A secondary writing program that teaches writing as a social and cooperative action is fundamental to helping students build community and form their unique identity and critical consciousness. If students learn how to develop their own intentions and voice by learning how to write, they will have the power of the pen to overcome oppression. This presentation describes this practice and also highlights our vision for how we must always interrogate our practices with theory.
